Kauai Nature Adventures
Whether you’re into intense eco-action or simply want to wander into the wilderness, A Kauai vacation lures you with its bevy of natural treasures.
A top pick for hiking, Kauai is lauded for its trails weaving into Waimea or zigzagging above the Napali Coast to valleys inaccessible by road. You can troop into untouched tropical rainforests brimming with the oldest flora in the Islands - all with a hidden waterfall and crisp plunge pool to refresh you before your return.
Cruise the coast along high sand dunes and end up at a hidden shoreline cove - yet another opportunity to cool off for your effort. Seems that Kauai hiking treks always pay off big with beauty, and often with a place to splash around as the ultimate reward.
An extensive network of trails vary from easy strolls to backpacker excursions requiring endurance and skill. A virtual one-stop resource for hiking scoop, Na Ala Hele (www.hawaiitrails.org) manages trails and road systems within the State Forest Reserve. NAH is a given go-to for descriptions, length, conditions, difficulty ratings and permitted operators available for specific excursions. So if hitting the trail is your top priority, check out this resource for all the info.
If you’re looking for an alternative to footing it, there’s horseback riding, ATV outings, bicycling and an even loftier encounter that’s truly a thrill a minute.
Imagine harnessing up to whiz across valleys, rivers and jungles with the greatest of ease - and safety. Zipline adventures let thrill seekers sail down a mountainside over a forest canopy to the valley floor below. It’s aerial action that revs it up a notch.
Prefer to discover Kauai’s beauty offshore or above it all? A selection of ocean operators and helicopter companies are also at your disposal. Itineraries vary, but the outcome is always the same. You’ll soak in sights and scenery that will literally take your breath away, leaving your Kauai vacation forever etched into your mind
The humming harbor at Port Allen is home to a fleet of pleasure boats that hit the Pacific for dinner sails, dolphin encounters, whale watching, snorkel treks, charter fishing and cruising past the daunting palisades of the stunning Napali Coast.
How about a little lazy river action? With Hawaii’s only navigable rivers, Kauai invites you to go with the flow along placid courses that meander into the jungle-like interior of this plush, lush island.
And then there’s tubing trips that thread through Lihue Plantation’s irrigation ditch and tunnel system into the island’s emerald green heart. Don a headlamp and hop onto a tube for an offbeat outing that winds through open canals, rushing flumes and mysterious tunnels. You can’t get much further off the beaten path than that!
