Kahului Airport Information

Kahului Airport (OGG) is located on the northern edge of the land bridge between Haleakala and the West Maui Mountain Range. The facility occupies 1,391 acres of land and is situated three miles east of the town of Kahului. Vehicular access to the passenger terminal is via a roadway network that connects to the Haleakala and/or Hana Highways.

Maui Ocean Recreation

With 81 beaches dotting some 120 miles of coastline, Maui was made for fans of sun and surf. Even the biggest beach guru of them all, "Dr. Beach" (Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman), consistently selects stretches of Maui’s sand among tops in the U.S.

And its blessings don’t end at the shoreline. Along Maui’s south and west coast lie a protected channel that it shares with Kahoolawe, Molokai and Lanai - and with hundreds of humpback whales.

In its whaling era, captains referred to this pristine water as "Lahaina Roadstead." And while they knew the semi-private bathtub-like channel well, nothing is as familiar with this waterway as humpbacks. Each winter, these gentle giants migrate from the Arctic Zone, arriving by the hundreds in November and departing with their newborn calves in late March.

Sunny and dry, the shores boast the two small harbors of Maalaea and Lahaina, and four resort areas at Makena, Wailea, Kaanapali and Kapalua. The region appeals with its humpback action, slew of beaches, surfable waves, tropical fish-rich reefs and sunsets that paint vivid memories in your mind.

Front and center in Maui’s marine education area is the Maui Ocean Center at Maalaea. Dedicated to and showcasing the unparalleled marine environment of the North Pacific, the aquarium complex is designed to create the sensation of wading into Hawaii’s ocean level by level.

You’ll find yourself "immersed" in a 600,000 gallon open-ocean tank, within an acrylic tunnel with a wrap-around view. Sinister-looking sharks, graceful manta ray and an explosion of tropical reef fish maneuver about you in this unique viewing venue.

Maui’s nautical options run deep, from Molokini snorkeling excursions and whale watching treks departing Maalaea Harbor to dolphin adventures and day excursions from Lahaina Harbor to Lanai.

And when it comes to beautiful beaches, Maui has a mass of them. On the northwest end of the island, dramatic lava peninsulas shelter the five bays of Kapalua. The area features three crescent white sand sensations, including Flemings, which continues to rank among Dr. Beach’s "America’s Best" year after year.

Once a playground for Hawaiian royalty, Kaanapali Beach was Hawaii’s first neighbor island master-planned resort. Little wonder it’s home to one of Maui’s most popular stretches that fronts the resort’s six hotels and four condominium villages.

On Maui’s southern shore, Wailea welcomes with five crescent beaches that sprawl along upscale resorts. Just beyond nearby Makena’s Little Beach and Big Beach, La Perouse Bay is sure to tempt even the most die-hard of land lovers into its sparkling waters that were certainly made for snorkeling.

From topsy-turvy windsurfing at Hookipa to slicing through the surf at Honolua, Maui’s marine action runs deep.

Maui Arts and Festivals

Well known for natural beauty that was millions of years in the making, Maui has etched its way into the artistic and culinary arena as well.

Art on Maui is far from new. Even the reveling whalers left their mark on the arts with scrimshaw. In fact, Lahaina is today the largest market for scrimshaw in the world, specializing in both contemporary and antique pieces.

The harbor town has long been a magnet for painters, sculptors and photographers who capture the splendor of Maui for all to enjoy. These galleries have gone beyond simply being Front Street fixtures by celebrating Friday Night Is Art Night each week. Browsers can enjoy local art with music, complimentary wine and pupus.

On weekends, the Lahaina Arts Society sponsors year-round programs under the massive banyan free on Front Street. Wood carvers, candle makers, painters, jewelry designers and other assorted artisans share their crafts in this fair-like atmosphere.

As a further display of the island’s devotion to art, The Art School at Kapalua provides classes in everything from pottery and painting to drama and drawing. In a more traditional tone, the annual Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua Celebration of the Arts is a three-day event showcasing demonstrations in hula and chant, hands-on workshops in Hawaiian art and genuine one-on-one interaction with local Village Gallery artists.

In Kahului, the Maui Arts & Cultural Center houses a 1,200-seat main theater, smaller theater for experimental performances, outdoor amphitheater and a visual arts gallery. The facility hosts concerts, screenings and cafe theater events for the Maui film community. It’s also home to the Maui Symphony Orchestra, an active contributor to the cultural life of the island.

With its flair for festivals, Maui is all about honoring culture, cuisine and lifestyles. From its humble debut as a small wine symposium in the early 1980s, the Kapalua Wine & Food Festival has evolved into an epicurean extravaganza that draws thousands of visitors each year.

The four-day affair includes tastings, pairings, celebrity cooking demonstrations, wine tasting seminars, winemaker dinners and a finale seafood festival with Hawaii’s top chefs.

As for good, clean living, LifeFest Kapalua is Hawaii's premier health and wellness event that combines programs to educate the mind, rejuvenate the spirit, encourage fitness and promote indigenous Hawaiian cultural practices.

In Wailea, the Maui Film Festival celebrates cinema and cuisine in star-studded style. The five-day event held each June mingles the two genres in a magical outdoor setting for all screenings. The culinary side premieres with a Taste Of The Islands, while a Taste of Wailea serves as a very grand finale.

Whether you’re a foodie, wine connoisseur, art aficionado or fitness buff, it’s guaranteed Maui has a gathering geared to your taste.
