Kona Activities and Recreation
Tackling the Ironman? Craving a culinary experience? Or are you simply wanting to indulge into a Hawaiian holiday that’s sure to be sunny? Nowhere else emits the charm and charisma of the Kona-Kohala Coast.
Sprinkled with exclusive upscale retreats and a fishing village that’s an icon to anglers, this special slice of Big Island paradise overwhelms with opportunities. Like Hilo, it’s an excellent springboard for taking off to discover vast Big Island wonders.
If you’re planning to explore the entire island, consider booking a Hawaiian Airlines neighbor island flight into one of the Big Island airports and departing the other.
Why not book a flight to Kona for a golf getaway, then work your way north to wrangling Waimea or south to Volcanoes before flying out of Hilo? Check out Hilo flights to see a different side of the Big Island.
With its near-perfect weather and pristine water conditions, the Kona-Kohala Coast is a natural for those seeking a Kona vacation that’s the epitome of paradise. Kicking it up a notch, area resorts and the town itself are chock full of festivals celebrating everything from dolphins to java!
There’s just so much going on along the coast that many visitors never get beyond it. Yet, those who do are amazed by all the deep valleys, flourishing rain forests and varied regions that meld into the island’s 11 climate zones.
Kona’s lively ambiance is a magnet for those who love an easy-does-it approach to leisure time. Alii Drive is lined with funky shops, lively eateries and historic sites.
From champion fishermen, eco-enthusiasts and world class triathletes to coffee aficionados and beermeisters, the distinctive destination showers with events and festivals geared to almost every niche of traveler.
Those into culture find a bounty right in the heart of Kona. The quaint town is home to the first ordained Christian Church in Hawaii, the last royal residence of Kamehameha the Great and one of the last homes of its modern monarchy. It’s steeped in history that honors hierarchy.
Heading south toward Volcanoes, you’ll cruise into coffee country. Tasting houses and farms welcome visitors to sample and purchase these celebrated harvests. And if you’re fortunate enough to be in the area during November, you can join in the local-style happenings of the annual Kona Coffee Cultural Festival. This 10-day celebration is filled with over 30 community events honoring the multi-ethnic heritage of Kona coffee pioneers and their gourmet brew.
Nearby at Kealakekua Bay, Captain James Cook met his untimely demise in 1779. On a lighter note, the bay presents some of the best snorkeling conditions in the entire Hawaiian Island chain.
Just beyond is Puuhonua o Honaunau, Hawaii’s last place of refuge that has been restored to Hawaiian village form with thatch-roof hale (huts) and heiau (temples) guarded by imposing tiki.
Driving some 96 miles from Kona along Hwy. 11 will take you to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, as described in Hilo Activities and Recreation.
Into a little bit of everything? Well, look no further than the Kohala Coast. The region revitalizes with recreation that runs the gamut – sailing, swimming, diving, snorkeling, sportfishing and tennis. In a league of their own are golf courses and spas - 18 magnificent layouts and 12 upscale spa facilities that take the r & r concept to the limit, making your Kona vacation the perfect culmination of adventure and relaxation.
It’s amazing to see how top golf course designers and resort landscapers have etched one beautiful oasis after another into the barren lava fields. Little wonder that this area of Kona has been tagged the "Golf Capital Of Hawaii."
Beyond the Kohala Resort area are the rolling Kohala Mountains and the hamlet of Waimea. The paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) themed town features a museum, shopping, dining and the king of the mountain - Parker Ranch.
Encompassing over 175,000 acres that run from the rugged volcanic range of Mauna Kea through lush green pastures, this massive cattle ranch welcomes visitors to its history-rich museum, tours of historic homes and horseback rides. Fourth of July is a bonus with its lively rodeo and round-up.
"Downsizing" rather than expanding, North Kohala actually has fewer residents today than it did 100 years ago. But what’s lacking in population is compensated in charm. The area is sprinkled with small shops, galleries and eateries. It’s also home to Hawi, the turnaround point for the bicycling portion of the annual Ironman competition each October.
Just east on Hwy. 270 in Kapaau, you’ll pass the original King Kamehameha Statue enroute to what is literally the end of the road. But this is not simply a place to change directions. It’s the Polou Valley Overlook, with its sweeping views of Waipio Valley.
If you opt to head on to Hilo, return to Waimea and head up to the Hamakua Coast. Or if Kona is your return of choice, you’ll be able to soak in all the beauty again!
